The Obama administration has fired a shot across the bow in the soon-to-be debated health care overhaul before the Supreme Court.

The administration filed papers with the court on Friday arguing that the mandated portion of the health care program, the most controversial aspect of the new law, is constitutional and should be upheld by the justices when they hear the case in late March. Friday’s submission suggested that given the “supreme national importance (of health insurance) that consumes 18 percent of the U.S. economy” the mandate falls within Congress’ power under the Constitution’s Commerce Clause. An 89-year-old man’s travel insurance mistake

Tony Smith, 76,  had a heart attack in Florida last February, but was covered by RBC Insurance. However, 89-year-old Leon van Witsen was not.

Tony Smith of Kitchener had a heart attack while visiting Florida this past February. A few months late, in June, Leon van Witsen was hospitalized in Texas. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, treated and flown home to Toronto by air ambulance.

Both men had turned to the same company to buy insurance that would pay for any unexpected medical emergency while outside of Canada.

But that’s where the similarities ended and the heartache began for 89-year-old van Witsen’s family.

Benefits of providing medical insurance to the poor is undeniable

In the wake of the announcement yesterday by some states that they are cutting payments to Medicaid, a landmark study out today settles the question once and for all: do poor people fare better when given health insurance? The resounding answer is yes.

When poor people are given medical insurance, they feel better, see their doctor more regularly, and maintain more financial stability, a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research confirms. They are also presumably healthier, making use of diagnostic and preventative services provided by their health care team. Should we be surprised at these outcomes?

The older you get, the trickier it may become to buy emergency medical insurance for travel. It’s not just the cost that keeps going up. So does the risk a claim will be denied.

You may have more medical conditions to remember and disclose when applying for coverage. You may be disqualified for coverage because your doctor has increased or reduced a prescription, or because of signs that a medical condition has become unstable.
